The Santa Maria’s Barrio is placed between Puertas de Tierra (the city walls) and the City Hall, and it’s the cradle of Alegrías from Cádiz, and Flamenco in general. In recent years it has been rehabilitated a big part of the neigbourhood, where you can find some Peñas Flamencas (Flamenco Associations), and the Municipal Centre of Flamenco Art La Merced. If you came to experience the thrill of a flamenco show, this is the place you have to go.
By the La Merced Square, you will find the Nuestra Señora de la Merced church. It belonged to the Mercedarios Descalzos convent, founded in 1629. After many years, the only building conserved is the tower and the main facade.
